A Terrible Father's Day, and One Phone Call | Jeff's Story

Jeff is 68 and lived and worked in Sparta, Michigan, before coming to Adult & Teen Challenge. For years, he struggled with drug use while working hard to hide it from everyone in his life: his family, his coworkers, everyone. That secret got harder and harder to maintain, until a point came where hiding it was no longer possible, and Jeff lost nearly everything.
Father's Day 2025
The moment that finally pushed Jeff to seek help was Father's Day 2025, a day he describes as terrible. As a father of four and grandfather of six, he had no plans to spend the day with any of them, and life had reached a genuinely horrible low. He needed somewhere to go, and he made one phone call. Just a few days later, he arrived at Western Michigan Adult & Teen Challenge (WMATC), welcomed in with no questions asked.
Watching Other Lives Transform
For Jeff, one of the most striking parts of his time at WMATC has been witnessing the transformation in other students, watching them rebuild relationships with friends and family they'd once lost. He calls it amazing to see up close.
A Different Kind of Relationship With God
Jeff grew up with some knowledge of God, attending church and reading the Bible over the years. But since coming to WMATC, he describes developing a completely different kind of relationship with God, one built on something deeper than familiarity alone.
He's also been struck by the stories of the other students around him, the lives they've lived and the things they're working to overcome, along with the staff members he credits as genuinely phenomenal in helping students through that process.
Worship and a Class That Changed How He Prays
Worship, led by Pastor Del, has become something Jeff looks forward to every single morning. But he points to a class on prayer taught by Pastor Doug as perhaps the most impactful single experience of his time at WMATC, one that reshaped both how he prays and the relationship with God that's grown out of it.
Three Simple Objectives
Jeff came into the program with three main goals: staying clean, which he says has been the easiest part inside WMATC's structure, building a better relationship with God, and rebuilding his relationship with his family. All three have progressed well, and he sees no reason to change course once he's back in the world.
What Comes Next
Jeff is looking forward to returning to his home church in Sparta, bringing with him some of the different forms of worship and church experiences he's encountered during his time at WMATC. Above all, he's eager to focus on his family, the relationships that brought him to this decision in the first place.
His message to anyone struggling with addiction or another problem they genuinely want to fix: this is a place where that's possible. It won't be easy, but real change happens here for those who truly want it.
